McDonough is a city in Henry County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its population was 22,084 at the 2010 census. McDonough was established in 1823 around a square that now serves as its downtown. It was named for naval officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough and grew as a trading center for cotton and later other crops as part of the Black Belt. In 1838 the city was chartered. It became a prosperous farming town by 1900 and had five cotton mills by 1925. But the Great Depression hit hard, causing many of the mills to close; by 1935, only three stood.
The city’s fortunes changed again in 1942 when it became home to an Army Air Forces training base/base hospital during World War II, with facilities later becoming Blue Bird Aviation and commercial warehouses. More manufacturing came in the 1960s after the completion of Interstate 75, with plants located on access roads off the freeway. By 2000 the median income for a household in the city was $41,507, and the median income for a family was $48,564. Major industries include JBS, the USA pork processing plant, shamrock Farms dairy processing plant, clean harbors environmental services hazardous waste processing plant, and Crider Foods poultry processing plant.
